Read the following Nature News Feature article about p values: “Scientific method: Statistical errors” by R. Nuzzo (PDF version)
Chapter 2.7 discusses how to model data using the normal distribution and chapter 2.8 discusses the meaning of confidence intervals and how to compute them for the normal distribution. The Nature article discusses the concept of “p-hacking” and the pitfalls of using p-values uncritically.
